Sonskrif Studios is a social enterprise as much as a business. We exist to make high-quality music production accessible to people and communities who are often excluded from it: by cost, by geography, by confidence, by the culture of an industry that hasn't always made space for everyone.

We are committed to:

  • Fair, transparent pricing with staged payment options

  • Educational support woven into the recording process

  • Creating opportunities for emerging and underrepresented musicians

  • Building local music infrastructure that outlasts any one person or project

  • Operating with care, honesty, and accountability in everything we do

If something about our practice doesn't feel right to you, or if there's something we could do better, please tell us. We're always learning.

What is sonskrif?

Daniel Woodfield | Founder & Director

Daniel is a producer, musical director and multi-instrumentalist. He plays woodwinds, keys, drums, percussion and folk strings, and arranges too, so he often ends up playing on the records he produces. He's worked extensively as a session musician for artists around the world and produced releases from Tadhg Cullen & the Magic's EP to Anna Anise's bilingual album Aneth and Mathew Thomoson and Elizabeth Elis's ground breaking Arlodhes a Shallot.

Sonskrif is the platform in which Daniel's love of quality music, creative innovation and the communities that support them come together.

Alongside the studio, he's finishing a PhD in Cornish music (Ethnomusicology) at SOAS and has worked with the Royal College of Music and Access Folk as a consultant. That doesn't mean sessions come with a lecture. It means he really cares about music as something people make together, and can offer insights into the cultural perspective of the worlds behind it.

The best ideas rarely come from everyone thinking the same way. When people from different backgrounds, cultures and experiences make things together, they bring perspectives nobody else would have thought of. That's where new ideas are born, and where we find better answers to the big problems the world is facing.

But the voices that can offer the most unique perspectives are often the ones with the fewest chances to be heard. Minority communities, whether that's cultural, linguistic, neurodivergent, disabled, LGBTQ+ or working-class, are often overlooked or made to feel the studio isn't for them. This is something we're actively challenging.

Cornwall knows this feeling well. The Cornish people are a recognised national minority, with our own language, music and traditions whose voices aren't always recognised or heard in wider society. And yet our culture is living and vibrant, constantly changing and full of new ideas: new songs in Kernewek, old tunes played in new ways, communities keeping traditions going on their own terms.

When different voices get space and support, everyone gains something, so that is what we encourage.

Sonskrif exists so more people can make music that sounds like where they're from and who they are, and so the rest of the world gets to hear it.
